Doesn't look like 10,000 feet to the top, does it? Home to some of Hawaii's ancient Gods, this is Mt. Haleakala, "House of the Sun". The "saddle" in the middle is Kaupo Gap, where the original lava flowed to form part of the island of Maui. Not to worry, this mighty volcano has been dormant for 200 years. For the adventure traveler, Maui has wonders to discover that few tourists ever see. The North Shore is an area of pristine beauty, almost no commercial activity, and a place to find that little bit of adventure. Previously innaccessible to tourists passing by, villages like Huelo now offer opportunities to get away from the hustle and bustle of the condos and hotels and still be close enough to enjoy the deep jungles of Hana and the tourist activities of Lahaina.
